Our Shavuot Service

Tuesday, June 11, 2024, beginning at 6:00 pm at Congregation Beth Shalom; Oneg to Follow.

Shavuot (שָׁבוּעוֹת, also pronounced Shavuos) means “weeks,” and it refers to the Biblical Holiday celebrated on Sivan 6 (and 7 in the Diaspora) on the anniversary of the giving of the Torah at Sinai. It celebrates the completion of the seven-week Omer counting period between the second day of Passover and Shavuot

The holiday of Shavuot is the day on which we celebrate the great revelation of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, more than 3,300 years ago. All of B’nai Israel stood at the foot of the mountain to hear the Ten Commandments from HaShem Himself.

Since we all stood at Mount Sinai, we must all reaffirm our commitment. Babies, young children, the elderly, all that are able, should attend Torah reading on the first day of Shavuot. We will hear the reading of the Ten Commandments and have the opportunity to accept them upon ourselves as b’nai Israel did by saying in one voice ” “We will obey every word Adonai has spoken.” Exodus 24:3

As we commemorate the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai, we renew our acceptance of HaShem’s Torah during this time every year.

We welcome you to join us during this wonderful time of the year, when we learn about the Festival of Shavuot and how it is relevant to our walk with HaShem. At Congregation Beth Shalom, we emphasize learning and living by the instructions and mitzvot of the Torah given to us my HaShem Himself; which are a pathway to life.
